4# The Talos Principle - 2015

Review91Score

The Talos Principle is a philosophical first-person puzzle game from Croteam, the creators of the Serious Sam series, and written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (Infinite Ocean). Players are tasked with solving a series of increasingly difficult and complex puzzles woven into a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in an inevitably doomed world. This definitive version contains the original puzzler in all of its glory and the ambitious expansion The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna.

5# Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - 2013

Review89Score

Brothers is presented from a third-person view overlooking the two brothers. The brothers are moved individually by two thumbsticks on the controller. The controller triggers also cause the respective brother to interact with the game world, such as talking to a non-player character or grabbing onto a ledge or object. The older brother is the stronger of the two and can pull levers or boost his younger brother to higher spaces, while the younger one can pass between narrow bars. The player progresses by manipulating the two brothers at the same time to complete various puzzles, often requiring the player to manipulate both brothers to perform differing functions (such as one distracting a hostile non-player character while the other makes their way around). Should either brother fall from a great height or get injured, the game restarts at a recent checkpoint. All of the in-game dialogue is spoken in a fictional language, thus the story is conveyed through actions, gestures and expressions.

10# The Last Guardian - 2017

Review82Score

The game has been shown to involve a young boy who befriends a giant bird, dog and cat hybrid creature, Trico, and the two work together to evade guards that are after them both. The game requires the player, controlling the boy, to manipulate Trico like a real animal, such as luring it with food, as to use the creature as a means to climb and reach high platforms or other remote places. This sets the core of the game on puzzle-based action, as in between the various puzzles the player will encounter, enemies will be encountered, potentially impeding progress. It is the player's role to survive in such an occurrence, much like in Ico.

14# Prune - 2015

Review91Score

The Colonel's Bequest is a character-driven graphic adventure game by Sierra On-Line. The Colonel's Bequest is one of the few Sierra On-Line adventure games to focus more on the characters than puzzles. Regardless of the importance of these elements, it is possible to finish the game without solving any puzzles, discovering many important details about the characters, or even identifying the murderer. The game's unusual title can be accredited to Sierra's long-standing tradition of including "Quest" in the title of nearly every graphical adventure they published.
