PC Windows Linux Mac OS Playstation 4 Nintendo Switch Xbox One

Lair of the Clockwork God is a hilarious blend of platformer and adventure game where the player controls Ben and Dan, two developers who try to prevent all the apocalypses while also bickering a lot. The game is an enjoyable juxtaposition of two gameplay styles that creates a fun experience. The point-and-click side is inspired by the wackier side of old LucasArts games and is more engaging than the platforming elements, which can be a little stiff. However, the game's overall triumph is the writing, which includes clever video game gags and broader gags that earn the Mature rating. The game is a welcome trip off the beaten path and is filled with goofy fun, even though it has some weaknesses in its platforming elements. Overall, it is worth checking out if players want to laugh a lot and enjoy solving puzzles.

Pros:
  • Hilarious and well-designed hybrid of platformer and point-and-click genres
  • Challenging and creative puzzles with solutions that subvert tropes and expectations
  • Great writing with unique and funny characters
  • Unique mashup of adventure and platforming genres
  • Very well done pixel art.
Cons:
  • Platforming controls can feel floaty and character glitches into the ground
  • Self-aware jokes may feel dated and not clever or funny enough for some
  • Occasional tediousness from constant character swapping
  • Cursor behavior and interaction menu issues

  • point-and-click
  • platform
  • adventure
